Risk Management

Risk work that changes decisions rather than filling a register. Covers identification, both qualitative and quantitative assessment, and response planning with the money and authority attached.

What it covers

  1. Framework and appetite

Risk policy, appetite and tolerance, and how thresholds turn into escalation rules.

  2. Identification

Structured techniques — checklists, assumption analysis, pre-mortems, and interviews — and how to surface risks nobody wants to name.

  3. Qualitative assessment

Probability and impact scales that mean the same thing to different people, and the limits of a heat map.

  4. Quantitative assessment

Expected monetary value, decision trees, three-point estimates, and Monte Carlo simulation of cost and schedule.

  5. Response strategies

Avoid, reduce, transfer, accept — and for opportunities, exploit, enhance, share. Costing a response against the exposure it removes.

  6. Contingency and reserves

Sizing contingency from the analysis rather than by percentage, and who is allowed to draw on it.

  7. The register in practice

Wording a risk as cause, event, and effect; assigning owners; keeping the register short enough to be read.

  8. Monitoring and review

Review cadence, trigger conditions, closing risks honestly, and reporting exposure over time.
